November 8, 2016

Trump (R) defeats former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton (D). Trump receives 306 electoral votes to Clinton’s 232, despite receiving some 2.8 million fewer votes in the popular election. Jill Lepore subsequently writes, “The election dredged from the depths of American politics the rank muck of ancient hatreds . . . And it exposed the bleak emptiness of both major political parties.” In Boston 277,366 go to the polls, 66.8% of registered voters and the highest turnout in a presidential election since 1964.
